Universal Product Code (UPC)
Definition:
System of product identification used in the USA by which a ten-digit number is assigned to each grocery product sold by US producers. The system is also in use in the UK where a 13-digit article number is assigned to each product. The code is printed in a system of black and white bars referred to as a BAR-CODE which can be read by an electronic scanner at the supermarket checkout.
