Register of Electors

Definition:
A listing of all those aged 17 and over who will be entitled to vote in Parliamentary and local elections prior to February 16 in the following year. The Register is updated every year in October and the revisions are published in February the following year or soon thereafter. While there will always be a small percentage of persons not recorded on the Register (approximately 4 per cent), and there will be a concentration of these in the younger and more mobile segments of the population, the Register is the only national sampling frame available and so is widely used for drawing samples of individuals. The Register is built up from a series of booklets - one for each polling district - organized by alphabetical street order in urban districts and name order in rural district.
