Definition:
A personality trait of social character defined by Riesman et al. (D. Riesman, N. Glazer, and R. Dinny, The Lonely Crowd, New Haven, Conn.: Yale University Press, 1950) which results in the individual adapting his or her VALUES, BELIEFS and BEHAVIOUR to those of the peer group with which he or she seeks to identify. Other-directed persons tend to conform by contrast with INNER-DIRECTED persons, who tend to innovate.
