on-line database
Definition:
A popular and useful source of up to date MARKET data, scientific publications and new technology information. They are comprehensive databases covering surveys, journal articles, books etc. held by host companies which may be accessed at any time for a fee. Each host company may have databases in one or several areas, e.g. technical, chemical, medical or business. Examples include Datastar, Dialog and Info-line. Access is possible using an acoustic coupler or modem and a terminal. Searches are accomplished by keying in relevant keywords. For example, a manager interested in computer games may first type in the word 'computer'. The system would search for all records containing this word. If there were too many 'hits', a second keyword 'games' would narrow the subset. Time limits may also be applied, e.g. post-1987. The result is a comprehensive list of relevant articles, reports, books etc. A charge is made for the connect time, for database royalties and for printing out the search details.
