Independent Television Association (ITVA)

Definition:
The body representing INDEPENDENT TELEVISION stations in the United Kingdom, which operated in practice as the ITV Network Centre. It is one of the organisations concerned with awarding the designation 'RECOGNISED ADVERTISING AGENCY'. Until quite recently, it also played a key role in the ADVERTISING CONTROL system, its Copy Clearance Secretariat pre-vetting television commercials against the ITC CODE OF ADVERTISING STANDARDS AND PRACTICE. However, it had become obvious by mid-1993 that the need to perform that function for the new satellite and cable services which were not members of the ITV network would require separation of the Secretariat from the ITVA's other activities, and the Broadcast Advertising Clearance Centre was duly established.
