Independent National Radio (INR)

Definition:
A recent addition to the COMMERCIAL RADIO network in the UK, set up by the RADIO AUTHORITY in 1992. Though its 3 constituent stations are numerically swamped by the 163 comprising the INDEPENDENT LOCAL RADIO network, each of them offers a different, strategically interesting audience profile to MEDIA PLANNERS. In 1997, they were Classic FM, Virgin 1215 and Talk Radio UK, the present holders of the 'INRI', 'INR2' and 'INR3' franchises. The Radio Authority has meanwhile published a consultation document examining the feasibility of introducing 'INR4' on a long-wave frequency. There are in fact already four non-local commercial radio stations in the UK. Atlantic 252, which started broadcasting to a reception area covering more than half the British Isles exactly three years before Classic FM, operates under an ILR 'incremental' licence.
