Independent Local Radio (ILR)
Definition:
The major part of the COMMERCIAL RADIO network in the UK, consisting of stations awarded a franchise by the RADIO AUTHORITY to broadcast to a local reception area. In 1997, there were 159 local and 4 regional ILR stations in England, 23 local and 1 regional in Scotland, 8 local in Wales and 6 local in Northern Ireland, 21 more in total than had been on air a year before. The remainder of the commercial radio network comprises 3 INDEPENDENT NATIONAL RADIO stations and one other, operating outside the RADIO AUTHORITY franchising system.
