gatefold
Definition:
A special option in the page format of a magazine, consisting of a left or right page printed on paper twice the usual width and then folded in half so that the reader can open it out, as though opening a gate. Presuming that readers do in fact bother to do this, the ADVERTISEMENT printed on the resulting 'gatefold' is thought to have special impact. The arrangement has the additional advantage of allowing a creative team to exploit the unusual LANDSCAPE space, rather similar to the shape of a poster in miniature. The gatefold format is sometimes applied to DOUBLE-PAGE SPREADS as well as single pages. It adds a significant surcharge to the cost of the space.
