Freud, Sigmund
Definition:
(1856-1939). Born in Czechoslovakia, studied at Vienna as a medical student but developed an interest in the study of the human mind. He was the founding father of psycho-analytic techniques. He showed the importance of unconscious motivations and desires in understanding behaviour and introduced the concepts of EGO, ID and super-ego. He was forced to leave Vienna in 1938 to escape anti-semitic Nazi persecution and died a year later aged 83.
