European Union (EU)

Definition:
On 11 December 1991 the Maastricht Treaty was negotiated where a new Treaty of Economic Union comprising an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a Political Union were agreed between the members of the ECONOMIC COMMUNITY. The Treaty came into effect on 1 November 1993 and established the European Union (EU) which incorporated the existing European Community (EC) together with the new EMU and European Political co-operation Framework with a common European Citizenship and the principle of subsidiary (decisions to be made at the most appropriate level) among its major features.
