electronic point of sale (EPOS)

Definition:
A scanning system, increasingly used by retail stores, to read a PRODUCT code. All goods are marked with a unique thirteen-digit BAR CODE. A He:Ne laser beam is used to read the bar code as the product is passed over it at the checkout. The code is then converted by computer to provide the shopper with a product description and price, and to provide the store with an INVENTORY update to facilitate STOCK ordering and product purchase pattern ANALYSIS.
