editing

Definition:
Sample survey data after collection should be inspected for completeness, consistency, and uniformity to sampling requirements. This editing is usually done initially by hand, and later by computer to check logical consistency. Errors may be treated by return of the data to the field, by discarding, or by arbitrary alteration. This last may be done by computer, and is described as a 'forced edit'. Editing is an important process in maintaining data quality, but the quality of editing is hard to judge subsequently.
