degrees of freedom

Definition:
A statistical term that indicates the number of free parameters involved in calculating a statistic. For example, the degrees of freedom associated with the MEAN of a series of numbers is the number of cases minus one: once the mean is known you only need all the cases bar one to be able to know the values of all the cases.
