database management system (DBMS)

Definition:
Software designed specifically for the organization and manipulation of DATA. The term is rather loose, as a DBMS associated with a mainframe has features and capabilities not found on a Personal Computer version, though the gap is narrowing. Mainframe DBMSs allow the user to build complex data structures and provide a high level of language interface. MARKET LEADERS in the PC market are Ashton Tate (dBASE IV) and Microrim (Rbase 5000).
