Data Protection Act

Definition:
The Data Protection Act of 1998 is concerned with the processing of personal information on individuals. The Act requires those who hold or process data to register with the Data Protection Registrar. Failure to do so is a criminal offence. The Act embodies eight principles which provide that data must be: "fairly and lawfully processed; processed for limited purposes; adequate, relevant and not excessive; accurate; not kept longer than necessary; processed in accordance with the data subject's rights; secure; not transferred to countries without adequate protection."
