best-before date

Definition:
The date stamped onto PRODUCTS, mainly food, to indicate the product should be consumed on or before that date. The date is determined by manufacturers after conducting trials to establish the product's SHELF LIFE. However, many products may still be usable after the 'best before' date so, to avoid confusion, those products which may not are distinguished by a 'Use by' date.
