Definition:
A department within a DEPARTMENT STORE, usually in the basement, selling merchandise at bargain prices. Goods offered may be ends of ranges, out of season stock, seconds as well as specially purchased lines to be sold at discounted prices. One of the best known examples is Filene's in Boston (USA) which discounts goods progressively until they are sold.
