Definition:
A merchandise classification system which allocates numbers to stock-keeping units used in the grocery supplier industry and by some of the larger firms of retailers, manufacturers and business machine producers. The numbers allocated to the article or product are reproduced on the article label in a machine-readable form; the number is recorded at the point of sale to permit the capture of sales data using number reading equipment linked directly or indirectly to a computer.
